The Dartmouth Conference (1956)

The famous Alan Turing talked about the possibility of thinking machines in 1950 but the birth of AI is often traced back to the Dartmouth Conference in 1956, where the term “artificial intelligence” was coined. Organized by John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and Claude Shannon, the conference aimed to explore the possibility of creating machines that could mimic human intelligence.

The Dartmouth Conference laid the foundation for AI research, setting the stage for future developments. It introduced key concepts and established AI as a distinct field of study.

The Logic Theorist (1956)

Developed by Allen Newell, Cliff Shaw and Herbert A. Simon, the Logic Theorist is considered one of the first AI programs. It was designed to mimic the problem-solving skills of a human and was capable of proving mathematical theorems. It’s proved 38 famous mathematical theorems and even found new shorter proofs for some of them.

The Logic Theorist demonstrated the potential of AI to perform complex tasks, inspiring further research and development in the field.
